Antibiotics are valuable medications that have made treating what were once life-threatening infections with bacteria, relatively easy. A growing threat to public health however, is the development of bacteria that are resistant to our current antibiotics. An infection with one of these resistant bacteria can increase costs, suffering, and even cause death. Each year fewer and fewer new antibiotics are being developed and we may find ourselves someday soon faced with bacteria that are resistant to all of our current defenses.
